To summarize multiple sources, summarize each one separately first, then compare them on the same questions, record where they agree and disagree, and write a synthesis that keeps every claim attributable to the source that made it. A multi-source summary that hides disagreement is not shorter; it is wrong.

Why multi-source work fails differently
Summarising one source is a compression problem. Summarising several is an attribution problem. Three failures are specific to multi-source work and none of them are solved by writing more carefully.
Averaging. Two studies report different effects, and the summary reports the midpoint. No source claimed the midpoint, so the summary now contains a claim nobody made.
Silent promotion. One source is clearer or more recent, so its framing becomes the summary’s framing, and the others are quietly reduced to agreement.
Lost attribution. After a few drafts, nobody can tell which source supports which sentence, which makes both correction and citation impossible.
The method below exists to prevent those three things. For the single-source foundation, use the article summary method; this guide assumes you can already do that.
Step 1: summarize each source on its own terms
Do not read for the synthesis yet. Summarize each source separately, using its own definitions and scope. Give every source a short label you will reuse throughout: S1, S2, S3.

Step 2: build a comparison grid
Once every source has its own summary, compare them on identical questions. Asking different questions of different sources is how a synthesis becomes an argument.

The definition row does the most work. Sources that appear to disagree often define the central term differently, and sources that appear to agree sometimes measure different things under one word.
Step 3: keep a disagreement ledger
Wherever the grid shows a conflict, write it down as a conflict rather than resolving it in your head.

What a reader needs to know about it:
A conflict you cannot resolve from the sources is a finding. Report it as one. “The two studies disagree, and the difference tracks their different definitions of the term” is more useful than a sentence that pretends the field is settled.
Step 4: write the synthesis in attributable sentences
Draft so that each sentence can be traced. Three sentence shapes carry a synthesis.
- Convergence: “Three sources report the same direction of effect (S1, S2, S3), measured over different periods.”
- Divergence: “S1 reports a gain where S2 reports no change; S1 studied volunteers and S2 studied an assigned cohort.”
- Gap: “No source in this set examined the effect beyond twelve weeks.”
Avoid the shape “research shows.” It names no one, and it is the sentence most likely to be wrong.
A worked example
Consider three fictional sources about whether short daily review sessions help first-year students retain course material. This example is illustrative and does not report real studies.
S1 reports improved end-of-term scores after ten-minute daily reviews in one course. S2 reports no significant change across four courses, and defines review as any self-directed study. S3 is a departmental report describing student satisfaction rather than scores.
A weak synthesis: “Daily review improves retention, though results vary.”
A bounded synthesis: “S1 reports higher end-of-term scores in one course using structured ten-minute reviews. S2 found no significant change across four courses, but counted any self-directed study as review, so the two are not measuring the same activity. S3 reports satisfaction rather than performance and does not speak to retention. The set contains no measurement beyond one term.”
The second version tells a reader what is known, what is contested, why, and what is missing.

A workable sequence is to summarize each source separately at a consistent depth, keep those summaries in history with their labels, then build the grid and ledger yourself from the checked summaries. What is the difference between a summary and a synthesis?
A summary represents one source. A synthesis reports the relationship between several sources: where they converge, where they conflict, and what none of them covers.
How many sources should a synthesis cover?
As many as your question requires and no more than you can attribute. If you cannot say which source supports each sentence, the set is too large for the record you are keeping.
What if the sources contradict each other?
Report the contradiction and its likely origin: different definitions, methods, populations, periods, or interpretations. Do not average the results, and do not silently prefer the most recent source.
Can I cite the synthesis instead of the original sources?

Does the order I read sources in matter?
It affects you more than the sources. Reading the clearest source first tends to make it the frame for everything after, which is why summarising each one separately before comparing is worth the extra step.

Limits and verification
This method organises comparison; it cannot establish that sources are methodologically comparable or that any of them is credible. Judging evidence quality, sample suitability, and conflicts of interest remains separate work.
AI assistance is particularly unreliable across sources: a generated multi-source summary can merge two findings into one sentence, attribute a claim to the wrong source, or resolve a genuine disagreement into false consensus. Check each attributable sentence against the source it names, and apply the AI summary accuracy checks before use. Follow the attribution and AI-use rules that apply to your course, workplace, or publication.
