The structure deliberately separates notes, cues, and a short summary. Cornell University’s explanation of the Cornell Note Taking System describes a notes area, a cue column, and a summary area, followed by reviewing and reciting. This template adapts that organization for textbook chapters; it does not claim that Cornell University designed or evaluated this particular worksheet.
How to fill the template without copying the chapter
1. Preview the chapter’s structure
Start with the chapter title, headings, learning objectives, opening questions, and end-of-chapter recap if present. Record the visible hierarchy before writing details. A heading map gives each later note a home and makes it easier to notice when one section receives too much attention.
Do not treat the recap as a substitute for the chapter. It may omit the examples, qualifications, derivations, or visual explanations that make a statement understandable. Mark what you previewed and what you actually read.
2. Read for relationships, not isolated sentences
For each section, ask what the author is trying to define, compare, explain, or demonstrate. A useful concept note has three layers: the main idea, the supporting relationship, and the concrete example. If the chapter says a result holds only under particular conditions, keep those conditions in the same note.
Avoid a list of disconnected bold terms. A term becomes useful when the notes also show how it relates to the chapter’s larger argument, process, or model. If you cannot place a term in the hierarchy, flag it instead of inventing a connection.
3. Attach a source location
Add a page, subsection, figure, or digital locator to consequential notes. A locator lets you check exact wording later and prevents your interpretation from quietly becoming the author’s claim. For an ebook whose page numbers change, use the chapter section and a short, non-infringing phrase that helps you find the passage.
Keep quotations rare and visibly marked. Most notes should be a faithful restatement in your own words, with attribution preserved when the material will be used in assessed or published work.
4. Treat figures, tables, and equations as separate evidence
A text note cannot fully represent every visual. Record the figure number, its apparent purpose, and the nearby text that explains how to read it. For an equation, define the symbols, state the conditions, and work through the book’s example yourself. For a table, note what its rows, columns, units, and comparison actually represent.
If a figure carries information that is not present in the prose, write “visual check required.” Do not ask a text-only summary to stand in for a diagram it was never given.
5. Write the chapter summary last
The final summary should come from checked notes, not from memory of the opening page. State the chapter’s purpose, the major relationship between concepts, one representative example, and an important condition or limit. If your summary cannot account for a major heading, decide whether that section is irrelevant to your purpose or accidentally omitted.
Completed generic example
Imagine a fictional introductory chapter called “Feedback in Everyday Systems.” The example below shows the shape of a completed record without claiming to reproduce a real textbook.

The hierarchy keeps the definition beside its boundary and example. The visual field does not pretend the diagram has been captured in text. The retrieval prompt tests the distinction most likely to be flattened by an overly short summary.
Turn notes into a checking and review loop
After the first pass, label each entry as one of four states:
- Located: the note has a page, section, figure, or table reference.
- Checked: the wording and conditions were compared with that location.
- Interpretation: the connection is yours rather than the author’s and is labelled accordingly.
- Open: something is incomplete, confusing, or dependent on a visual you still need to inspect.
Next, cover the answers to the retrieval prompts and respond without looking. Compare your response with the chapter, not only with your earlier note. This is different from a paper-focused record. A research paper usually needs dedicated fields for question, method, sample, results, and uncertainty; use the research paper summary template for that task. A bounded Summarise Visually workflow
The verified product boundary is supplied text with selected summary modes. It does not establish visual extraction from textbook figures, tables, page layout, or equations. Begin with a section whose text you can legitimately supply, and keep the textbook open beside the result.
Use Detailed when you need a candidate prose condensation, Key Points for a candidate concept list, or Q&A for candidate questions and answers. These labels describe available modes, not a guarantee that the result will preserve every qualification or produce suitable study questions. Compare the output with your hierarchy, term boundaries, and source locators before moving anything into the final chapter record.
The textbook summarizer workflow describes the current product route and its boundaries. A safe sequence is: choose a bounded text section, generate one candidate result, identify every figure or equation reference, check the text against the book, then write the final notes in the template yourself.
Limits and verification
- A text-based workflow can omit information carried by diagrams, tables, typography, page layout, or equations.
- A compact result can remove conditions, merge distinct terms, or make an incomplete source selection look like the whole chapter.
- A generated question may be ambiguous, unsupported, or focused on trivia; check both the question and answer against the chapter.
- A source location helps verification but does not prove that your interpretation is correct.
- Edition differences can change page numbers, terminology, examples, and chapter organization.
- Assignment, citation, and academic-integrity requirements are set by the relevant instructor or institution, not by this template or app.
Before relying on the notes, compare every major concept with its source location, inspect all visuals marked for review, and answer at least one retrieval prompt per major section without looking. If a detail affects assessment, safety, professional practice, or another consequential decision, consult the original textbook and qualified guidance.
